Originally trained as a painter, Beth VanDusen has shifted her
focus to exploring the art of jewelry–making. Having received
an undergraduate degree in Fine Arts and a Masters Degree in
Art Therapy from Pratt Institute, Beth shows a refreshing new
aesthetic in her work as a jewelry maker.
During her early years at Philadelphia College of Art, Beth earned
extra money selling art-jewelry on the now famous South Street.
Upon graduation she moved to New York City and pursued her love
of painting while working in the textile industry as a designer.
After 13 years in textiles, Beth made the heartfelt decision
to change her career path. Drawn to the philosophy of helping
others by using art as a means of expression, she embarked on
a career in Art Therapy. While pursuing her Master’s at
Pratt, Beth revisited her love of jewelry, as a creative respite
from her studies. This work gradually expanded into new mediums
with exciting results. Soon, Beth began creating wearable
forms of art that gave her an expanded range of creative expression.
After graduating
from Pratt and working as an Art Therapist in Brooklyn, NY, Beth moved to San
Francisco. This change proved to be the catalyst for the launch of her jewelry
business, Kato’s Charm. While continuing her work as an Art Therapist,
Beth has expanded her range of mediums and jewelry techniques, most recently
discovering new methods to utilize metals. Her work now includes the use of
Precious Metal Clay, Sterling Silver and gold. In all her work, Beth is greatly
inspired by her love of natural botanicals and the wonders her new home of
California has offered her. Her attention to easily overlooked grasses, leaves
and other natural treasures, has inspired truly one-of-kind pieces wearable
by all.
